BEGINNING THE JOURNEY

My husband and I signed up in April, 2010 to be part of the Arkansas Catholic Newspaper's 100th anniversary celebration to visit the Holy Land. The trip was through the Terra Sancta Pilgrimages in Southfield, Michigan, and was led by Father Alex Kratz, a Franciscan priest. The Franciscan friars are the Official Guardians of the Holy Places for the Roman Catholic Church.
Assisting Father Alex were volunteers from Terra Sancta as well as some members of the Diocese of Little Rock including Cackie Upchurch. Bishop Anthony Taylor was also a pilgrim, as was our own parish priest, Father Erik Pohlmeier. All along we were reminded that we were "Pilgrims" not tourists, in order to prepare us for the hardships we might encounter. We attended two orientations, and had a lot of information to read before beginning the pilgrimage on March 17.
This trip was on my husband's "bucket list," but I actually had no expectations. I was just going along to help him out, since he is 84 years old, and has some bad knees. Little did I know how being a pilgrim in the Holy Land would change me.
